Enrichment offer

Our Enrichment Offer

At St John’s CE Primary School, we believe that education is about much more than what happens in the classroom. Our enrichment offer gives every child opportunity to discover new interests, develop talents, build confidence, work with others and make a difference to the world around them. Our enrichment is closely linked to our school vision:

“Following Jesus’ example, we seek to grow good people who are ready to make a difference to the world around them.”

🎨 Arts and Culture

Children have opportunities to develop their creativity and experience the arts through:

  • specialist music teaching and learning to play an instrument;

  • choir and musical performances;

  • school productions and performances;

  • dance and creative activities;

  • visits to museums and places of cultural interest; and

  • opportunities such as Young Voices and performances for our local community.

🌳 Nature, Outdoors and Adventure

We want our children to develop a love of the outdoors and an understanding of the world around them. Opportunities include:

  • our on-site Forest School;

  • outdoor learning and environmental activities;

  • litter-picking and caring for our local environment;

  • curriculum-linked visits;

  • our Year 6 residential at Manor Adventure in Shropshire; and

  • visits and experiences that develop independence, teamwork and resilience.

⚽ Sport and Physical Activity

Children are encouraged to be active, develop new skills and enjoy being part of a team. Our offer includes:

  • our OPAL approach to play;

  • a wide range of sporting activities and clubs;

  • competitive opportunities including football, cricket, dodgeball and other sports;

  • cross country, netball and other physical activities;

  • specialist PE and sports provision; and

  • opportunities to represent St John’s in competitions and events.

❤️ Civic Engagement and Community

We encourage children to understand their responsibilities to others and to make a positive contribution to their community. Children have opportunities to:

  • take part in our Faith Team and contribute their ideas;

  • become play leaders, reading buddies, sports ambassadors and prefects;

  • support charitable causes and our link with Destiny School in Kenya;

  • take part in environmental projects;

  • support our local community and church; and

  • develop an understanding of how they can make a difference to others.

🌟 Wider Life and Future Skills

Our enrichment experiences help children develop the skills and confidence they will need as they grow. These include:

  • our Year 6 Enterprise experience, developing financial and business skills;

  • leadership opportunities;

  • teamwork and communication;

  • problem-solving and independence;

  • specialist visitors and workshops;

  • educational visits linked to learning; and

  • opportunities to develop confidence, responsibility and resilience.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our trips, visitors and special experiences are carefully planned to enhance and extend our curriculum. Children might visit places such as the Stockport Air Raid Shelter, Quarry Bank Mill or Chester Zoo, or take part in workshops and experiences that bring their learning to life.

We also work with a range of local and external partners, including sports clubs, the local library and specialist providers, to broaden the experiences available to our children.

Enrichment for Everyone

We believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience enrichment. We monitor participation in trips, clubs and other opportunities and use this information to identify children who may be at risk of missing out. Where barriers are identified, we work with families to remove them.

We are also mindful of the financial pressures faced by families. The vast majority of our enrichment experiences are free or subsidised, and we aim to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent a child from taking part.

Shaped by Our Children

Our enrichment offer continues to develop in response to the interests and ideas of our pupils, alongside feedback from staff and families. Children are encouraged to tell us about the activities, clubs and experiences they would like to see at St John’s.

We want every child to leave St John’s with memories, experiences, skills and interests that extend beyond the classroom and help them to become confident, compassionate young people who are ready to make a difference to the world around them.
