Governors

Our governing body’s main aim is to ensure that St John’s school provides a good quality education and looks after the wellbeing of all our pupils.

The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the headteacher and staff. Rather than manage, governors are there to monitor and help shape the school’s future direction and focus.

Our governing body has an excellent working relationship with the headteacher and staff. We provide challenge and support to the headteacher, drawing on their knowledge and experience. We make decisions together on matters such as performance, targets, school policies and development plans. We also oversee school budgets and staffing.

We receive regular reports from the school leadership team, monitoring how well the school is doing and how well policies and plans are being implemented. Governors attend regular meetings, and read relevant reports and background papers. Governors can expect to attend around 1-3 meetings every term, either full meetings of the governing body or committee meetings. Governors may also be part of teacher appointment panels and additional working parties which focus on the school’s development.

You can see a brief overview of the impact of the governing body with the governor impact statement below.

Who is on the governing body?

The governing body at St Johns is made up of the Head Teacher, Mr Harrison;  the vicar of St John’s church, six foundation governors who are appointed either by the Chester Diocese or by St John’s PCC;  2 elected parent governors; 2 elected staff governors and one governor appointed by Cheshire County Council.

How long is the appointment for?

The appointment as an elected parent governor is for four years.

What qualifications do I need?

None – everyone has skills and experiences they can offer to support and challenge our school. The most important thing is your time and commitment, being willing to become involved in the life of the school and to have a genuine interest in the progress and wellbeing of all St Johns’ pupils.
