Autism

St John's endeavours to be a school which is inclusive and supportive of children with autism. We have recently worked with the Autism Education Trust who have trained staff in how to be supportive of children with autism so that they can thrive in school.

For ALL children we ensure our classrooms:

  • Have clear visuals such as timetables/lists etc.

  • Have clear and straightforward language.

  • Have clear routines and roles.

  • Teach children about socialising through PSHE, My Happy Mind and woven through the curriculum (e.g. through an English text).

For SOME children:

  • They may take part in a small group working on an area appropriate to their need e.g language/social skills.

  • They may have bespoke support in the classroom e.g. now and next cards

The waiting list for a diagnosis is frustratingly long currently. If you have any concerns about your child then please speak to your class teacher about what strategies and support can be put in place. You can arrange an appointment with the SENCo by contacting the school office.
