At St John the Evangelist Primary School all children have a right to a broad, balanced and relevant education which provides continuity and progression and takes individual differences into account. We want children to develop a love of learning across a wide range of subjects. All work is planned to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum (2014) and staff work hard to deliver exciting and stimulating lessons. The National Curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
At St Johns our curriculum is organised into a 2 year rolling plan Cycle A and Cycle B. In each year there are 6 termly topics. Each topic has a main focus and is usually based around a quality English text. (Detailed termly plans can be found on the teaching and learning pages for each year group.)We are currently on Cycle B. These plans are regularly reviewed and adapted to meet changing needs and interests.
Half Termly topics are supplemented with a number of Theme Weeks.
These include: Book week, which this year looks at the book Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World By Kate Pankhurst.
Geography based theme weeks in which the children study a country in depth.
Science week and this year we also have a World Faith Week - in which we explore different Faiths from across the World.
Newsletters detailing information about past theme weeks can be found on the teaching and learning pages.
In their learning children will:
Engage with their learning so that they develop independent learning and remain committed to learning throughout their school careers and their lives.
Develop the personal qualities they need be good citizens and to respond the changing contexts of their future lives.
Develop a sense of their own nationality and culture at the same time developing a profound respect for the nationalities and cultures of others.
We use a variety of teaching materials to support and assess the children’s learning. This includes the use of Rigby Star, Bug Club and Rapid Phonics to teach the children to read. We use The White Rose Maths hub resources to support our maths teaching and the Rising stars Primary Framework to assess the children’s learning. Further information on the curriculum can be obtained by sending an email to the school bursar
